Plan on about a year from first conversation to first day of class. Your school’s deadlines determine your schedule.

Step 1

Decide what you are applying for

High school or community college, your budget ceiling, and your start date. These three answers determine every later step, and changing them late is expensive.

Step 2

English tests and the shortlist

Sit an English test early enough to retake it if you need to. Build a shortlist of three to five schools or colleges, all of which you could afford in full.

Step 3

Documents and drafting

Order transcripts and certified English translations, ask teachers for references with six weeks' notice, and draft any statements. Translations and official records are the steps that most often run late.

Step 4

Submit

Each school and college sets its own dates. High schools often close applications in winter for the following autumn; many community colleges admit students for several terms a year. Our listings show each institution's own dates where it publishes them, with the source.

Step 5

Offers and proof of funds

Compare the full cost — tuition, fees, housing and insurance — rather than tuition alone. Assemble bank statements and sponsor letters for the amount each school requires before it will issue an I-20.

Step 6

I-20 and the student visa

Your school or college issues the I-20; the visa is a separate government process. We can walk you through the SEVIS I-901 fee and the DS-160, organise your documents and run practice interviews, but you complete, sign and submit every form yourself — see the visa disclaimer under Services and fees.

You complete, sign and submit the DS-160, pay the SEVIS I-901 fee and attend the interview yourself, and every answer must be true and your own — we will never suggest otherwise. We cannot guarantee a visa. Student visa decisions are made solely by U.S. consular officers. For visa information, use travel.state.gov or EducationUSA, and for legal advice consult a licensed U.S. immigration attorney.
